KEI is the “Keyword Effectiveness Index”.
The KEI compares the number of searches for a keyword with the number of search results so it can tell you what are the most effective keywords for your campaign. KEI can be a very important factor when doing keyword research.
My first month of keyword researching I invested, WAIT let me rephrase that, WASTED alot of money. I was too busy going after the most generic keywords, and not putting any emphasis on the important factors of choosing keywords. I saw the KEI tag many times but never cared to view it or even understand it. That was my lose, and a complete learning curve.
Now I understand the importance of KEI.
The formula used for determining KEI is (Number of Searches / Number of results).
Here is an example; lets say a the number of searches for a specific keyword is 530 per month and Google will display the keyword results as 195,888. Then the ratio between the popularity and competitiveness for your keyword is
(530 x 530)/195,888. Which will give you a KEI of 1.43
Look for higher KEI, because it can mean the keyword is more popular and will have less competition, which might lead to a better change of reaching your goal.
This isn’t the only factor that should be used when searching for keywords but this should help you through the process. If it does have a high KEI dont always go with that keyword. Do a little research and evaluate the keyword to see if you have a chance of competing with others.
Choose wisely, and don’t settle for the generic keywords, whereas the competition will be very high.
Until next time,

Matt,
What a great summary of the KEI index. I too have been through this learning curve and have wasted a lot of time with using keywords that were not heavily searched. Like you say, the KEI is not the only piece of the puzzle, but it is a very important one.

Matt,
This is an excellent post, your explanation of KEI is one of the best.
I also used Suzanne’s tool, and once I understood that keywords and SEO are not that scary it became a lot easier.

Hi Matt,
Great explaination of the KEI formula.
It is a very handy tool to get a rough idea of a keyword’s worth to your website.

Matt,
Thanks for this insight. I have not used this calculation before.
Just one thing that might affect the calculation though… When Google says that a certain keyword brings up (for example) 330,000 results… if you click through the google results pages you will eventually come to the end of the list A LONG WAY BEFORE the 330,000th site… MOST of the sites are actually dumped in the dreaded duplicate info directory, and that might affect the calculation, don’t you think?
Just a thought…

Thanks for this Matt,
I have just re SEO’d my site for new keywords, but didn’t know about the KEI formula, so I will now go and have a play, to see if I have chosen wisely or not.
Thanks again
